HC Deb 25 July 1929 vol 230 cc1476-7
61. Mr. EDE

asked the President of the Board of Education how many children there are between the ages of 11 and 12 years in the elementary schools of South Shields; the number of ex-elementary school children who enter secondary schools in the borough each year; and how the proportion between these two figures compares with the proportion for the county as a whole?

Sir C. TREVELYAN

On 31st March, 1927, there were 2,089 children between 11 and 12 years of age on the registers of elementary schools in South Shields. During 1927–28, 176 children from these schools were admitted to secondary schools on the grant list, the percentage being 8.4 as compared with a percentage of 11.1 for England and Wales.

62. Mr. EDE

asked the President of the Board of Education how many secondary school places there are in rate-aided schools in the county borough of South Shields; what proportion they are to the population of the borough; and how many free places there are in the rate-aided secondary schools of the borough?
