HC Deb 25 July 1929 vol 230 cc1485-6
101. Major CHURCH

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that the River Lea from Tottenham lock downwards through the districts of Hackney and Homerton is, and has for many years been, in a foul condition; and whether, having regard to the fact that this stretch of the river is a menace to the health of residents near its banks, he will take steps to ensure that the river is restored to a reasonable standard of purity?

Mr. GREENWOOD

Several large schemes of sewerage and sewage disposal have been carried out at heavy cost in recent years by local authorities with a view to improving the condition of the river. I am arranging for a visit of inspection in the near future.

Captain AUSTIN HUDSON

Is the Minister of Health aware that most of those schemes have already been finished and that the condition of the river is very nearly as bad as it was five years ago? Will the right hon. Gentleman inquire into this question?

Mr. GREENWOOD

I have already undertaken early inspection.
