34. Mr. W. M. ADAMSONasked the Home Secretary whether he has now given consideration to the recommendation of the Staffordshire Standing Joint Committee to appoint Commander Legge as assistant chief constable for the county; and if he can now make a statement on the matter?
§ Mr. CLYNESYea, Sir, the position is that under the Police Regulations the only matter on which my approval is required is as to the appointment of a person whose age is over 30 years, and having regard to the nature of the post in question, I have come to the conclusion that I should not be justified in withholding my approval.
Mr. ADAMSONHas the right hon. Gentleman taken into consideration applicants under the age who were recognised police officers with experience?
§ Mr. HANNONIs not this officer qualified in every respect for the appointment?
§ Mr. SPEAKERThat point has already been dealt with.
§ Mr. CLYNESAll I have to take into consideration is whether the decision to make the appointment was justified, and I have reached the conclusion that I ought not to interfere.
