HC Deb 29 January 1929 vol 224 cc761-2
39. Mr. RENNIE SMITH

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the present position of the Government with regard to proposals for the introduction of conscription into the military services of Iraq?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Mr. Amery)

The attitude of His Majesty's Government on the question of conscription in Iraq was explained in the reply which I gave to the hon. and gallant Gentleman, the Member for Dumbarton (Lieut.-Colonel Thom), on the 23rd April last. There has been no change in this respect.

Mr. SMITH

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether it is the public opinion in Iraq, or the opinion of His Majesty's Government, that is in favour of this proposal?

Mr. AMERY

That point is precisely the one that was fully answered in the reply to which I have referred.
