HC Deb 19 February 1929 vol 225 c931
11. Mr. THURTLE

asked the Secretary of State for War if his Department has in its possession information as to the number and capacity of underground places in London which would be suitable as shelters from aerial bombing in the event of war?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Lieut.-Colonel Sir Vivian Henderson)

I have been asked to reply. Under the direction of my Noble Friend the First Commissioner of Works, a survey of places suitable as shelters from aerial attack is being made. My Noble Friend is not able to give any details as to the result of this survey.

Mr. THURTLE

Can the hon. and gallant Gentleman say whether, when the survey is finished, he will be able to let us know the extent and capacity of these places?

Sir V. HENDERSON

No, Sir.

Mr. WELLOCK

Does the hon. and gallant Gentleman not think that in case there is another war practically everybody in London would be underground?
