HC Deb 18 February 1929 vol 225 cc760-1
13. Mr. L'ESTRANGE MALONE

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has yet received any Report dealing with the working of the detention camps in Kenya Colony; how many persons have been detained during the last complete year; and for what average period were they detained in the camps?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

My right hon. Friend has received reports for the year 1927 and the first six months of 1928. The total number of persons committed to serve sentences during the whole period was 3,171. The average length of sentence was between three and four weeks.

Mr. MALONE

Are these camps solely for African natives?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

I think these detention camps are really for Africans.
