HC Deb 17 December 1929 vol 233 cc1188-9
34. Mr. REMER

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many new factories of foreign origin have been erected in this country since the imposition of the motor tyre duty; and if he can give any indication as to the number of men employed at those factories?

Mr. W. GRAHAM

According to my information six factories have been established by foreign interests since the imposition of the duty on motor tyres in April, 1927. One of the factories was commenced before that date. The five of these factories that are now working employ approximately 5,500 men.

Mr. REMER

Is not that a very favourable result?

Mr. GRAHAM

The hon. Member is now on very debatable ground?

Mr. MANDER

Is it not a fact that one of these factories was started under Free Trade and entirely as a result of Free Trade conditions in this country?
