HC Deb 30 April 1929 vol 227 c1371
17. Mr. MACLEAN

asked the Lord Advocate the number of cases of alleged reckless driving by omnibus drivers where fatalities occurred during 1928, submitted to Crown counsel by the Glasgow Sheriff's Fiscal, and the number in which no proceedings were taken; and the number of similar cases in Glasgow where no fatalities occurred, which were submitted to Crown counsel by the Glasgow Sheriff's Fiscal, and the number in which no proceedings were taken?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I must apologise for the absence of my hon. and learned Friend. As regards the cases referred to in the first part of the question, the number submitted was 38. No proceedings were taken in 37 cases. As regards the cases referred to in the latter part of the question, one case was submitted and no proceedings were taken in that case.

Mr. MACLEAN

Am I to understand that there was only one case submitted to Crown counsel by the Sheriffs-Fiscal in which no proceedings were taken? Is not that rather a peculiar contradiction of the answer which was given to me last week?

Sir J. GILMOUR

No, Sir. I do not think that there is any contradiction. If the hon. Gentleman wishes to put down a question, I shall be glad to submit it to my hon. and learned Friend.

Mr. MACLEAN

Is it not a fact that last week I was told that a number of cases were submitted to the Crown counsel, and now I am told that only one case had been submitted to the Crown counsel, and that the others were dealt with by the Fiscal himself?
