HC Deb 24 April 1929 vol 227 c862
15. Mr. STEPHEN

asked the Minister of Labour the number of applicants who have been refused unemployment benefit since the beginning of this year to the latest available date on the ground of not genuinely seeking work and the number refused on other grounds for the same period?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

Between 15th January, 1929, and 11th March, 55,106 applications for benefit made at Employment Exchanges in Great Britain were disallowed by insurance officers on the ground that the applicants were not genuinely seeking work, and 52,578 were disallowed on other grounds. In addition, out of 14,783 claims recommended for disallowance by Courts of Referees on review after the payment of 78 days' benefit 14,504 were recommended for disallowance on the ground that the applicants were not genuinely seeking work. These figures relate to the numbers of separate applications and not necessarily to separate individuals.
