HC Deb 29 November 1928 vol 223 c569
9. Mr. DAY

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, whether his attention has been called to a large fire which occurred at Shoreham Harbour on Sunday, 11th November, which was only 30 yards away from a number of benzol storage sheds; and whether any regulations exist as to the storage of benzol in large quantities in thickly-populated areas?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Sir William Joynson-Hicks)

Yes, Sir. The storage of benzol is subject to the requirement of a licence under the Petroleum Act, which is granted by the local authority. The conditions as to the mode of storage in each case would be laid down by the local authority. There are no general Government regulations as to storage.

Mr. DAY

Are there any inspections to see that these Regulations are carried out?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

That is a matter for the local authority.
