HC Deb 27 November 1928 vol 223 cc226-7
43. Mr. HASLAM

asked the Minister of Transport what response he has received to his circular to local authorities urging upon them the desirability of using British road material?

Colonel ASHLEY

As far as I can judge, local authorities have, generally speaking, responded satisfactorily to the representations made to them by my Department in favour of the use of British materials and plant, but my hon. Friend will realise that I am not informed of every order given by local authorities.

Mr. HASLAM

Can the Minister give us any idea of the proportion of foreign material that is used, as compared with English?

Colonel ASHLEY

I should hesitate to give it without notice, but my recollection is that it is something in the neighbourhood of 5 or 10 per cent.—a very small proportion.
