Mr. SEXTONasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he has received protests from the Federation of Wholesale Confectioners and other food distributors, complaining of the additional heavy burden imposed upon them as a result of the petrol tax of 4d. per gallon; and if, as many of those complaining are in comparatively poor circumstances, he will consider the question of exemption in their case from the extra burden?
§ Mr. CHURCHILLA representation of the nature described in the first part of the question has been received. With regard to the second part, I am afraid that I cannot depart from the principle which I have repeatedly stated to the House of Commons, namely, that I cannot allow the tax to be vitiated by exemptions.
