HC Deb 12 November 1928 vol 222 cc488-9
74. Miss LAWRENCE

asked the Minister of Health whether persons drawn from the distressed areas, under the provisions of the circular on works for the relief of unemployment, will, if unemployed on the termination of their employment, be chargeable to the parish from whence they have been taken, or whether steps will be taken to enable them to acquire a settlement in the parish where the relief work is provided?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of HEALTH (Sir Kingsley Wood)

It is not proposed in connection With the unemployment scheme to make any alteration in the existing law of settlement.

Miss LAWRENCE

Does the answer mean that, if such men became chargeable to the Poor Law at the expiry of their jobs, they must be transferred to their old district at the expense of the ratepayers?

Sir K. WOOD

I must have notice of that question.
