HC Deb 12 November 1928 vol 222 cc480-1
47. Mr. BELLAMY

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the continued difficulties of the cotton industry, he will appoint a Commission to inquire into the present situation, with a view to arriving at a policy for the restoration of Lancashire trade?

Mr. H. WILLIAMS

I have been asked to reply. I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given by the President of the Board of Trade to the hon. Member for the Camlachie Division (Mr. Stephen) on 2nd August, a copy of which I am sending him.

Mr. BELLAMY

Has the attention of the Prime Minister been called to the speech made by the hon. Member for Bolton (Mr. Hilton) in this House on Thursday last in which he expressed the opinion of Lancashire manufacturers on the policy of the Government with regard to the cotton industry?

Sir WALTER de FRECE

Is it not a fact that the cotton industry has not asked for such an inquiry?

Mr. WILLIAMS

I am not aware that the cotton industry has asked for an inquiry, but the industry is carrying out an inquiry.
