HC Deb 08 November 1928 vol 222 c208
32. Mr. W. THORNE

asked the Minister of Health whether, in view of the amount of coal, iron ore, and other raw materials which are transported by waterways, he intends to bring canal transport companies within the Government's de-rating proposals?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

Under the Rating 'and Valuation (Apportionment) Act, canal hereditaments and the wharves of canal transport companies Are within the definition of freight transport hereditaments, and as such will be qualified for the rate relief which it is proposed to give to those hereditaments.

Sir HERBERT NIELD

Cannot the right hon. Gentleman include this means of transport in the relief which is to be given to the railway companies?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I am afraid there would be serious difficulties in the way.
