HC Deb 09 May 1928 vol 217 cc228-9
39. Sir A. HOLBROOK

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has received any representations with regard to the importation of high-speed steel into this country; whether he is aware that the British and Saar Steel Company are importing and selling all kinds of tool steel, including rustless steel and iron, at about half the price which such steel can be produced in Sheffield; and if he will consider an inquiry with the view to deciding whether high-speed steel should be one of the industries to be safeguarded?

Mr. WILLIAMS

I have had no such representations, nor have I received information in the sense of the second part of the question. The third part of the question does not therefore arise.

Mr. GOODMAN ROBERTS

Has the time not arrived when the whole question of foreign competition in the steel industry should be considered by a Safeguarding Committee?
