HC Deb 09 May 1928 vol 217 c217
34. Mr. SHINWELL

asked the Minister of Transport how many men are at present employed on the construction of the new Glasgow-Edinburgh road; and whether he is taking any steps to expedite its completion?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Colonel Ashley)

About 1,000 men are now employed on the construction of this road. Every possible step is being taken by my Department to expedite completion.

Sir EDMUND TURTON

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that in the opinion of all sensible people the expenditure of public money on this new road between Glasgow and Edinburgh is wilful and wasteful?

Mr. SPEAKER

The hon. baronet seems to be giving his opinion.

Sir E. TURTON

May I ask the Minister of Transport to see that there will be no excessive expenditure on this road, and will he devote more of this money to expenditure on county main roads and rural district roads?

Lieut.-Colonel LAMBERT WARD

Would it be possible to hang a map in a prominent position in this building showing the state of these roads and other roads which are nearing completion?

Mr. AUSTIN HOPKINSON

Could we also have a statement from the Minister of Transport giving an approximate view of the amount of damage done to all the local roads in Lanarkshire by the construction of this trunk road?
