§ 6. Mr. KELLYasked the President of the Board of Trade the number of companies engaged in the work of sugar refining; and the number of men and women engaged by such companies?
§ Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTERI am unable to state the number of companies engaged in the work of sugar refining. According to the Preliminary Report on the Third Census of Production, the average number of persons employed in the sugar and glucose trades in 1924 was 12,626, of whom 11,079 were males and 1,547 females.
§ Mr. KELLYIn view of the approaches which are now being made to the Government with regard to the sugar refining trade, may I ask if any record is kept of the companies which have made such approaches?
§ Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTERI think that that question had better be asked of the Minister to whom the approaches were made.
