Mr. DAYasked the Minister of Transport what progress has been made to provide alternative routes enabling traffic to by-pass the Elephant and Castle, in the borough of Southwark; whether any negotiations are proceeding with a view to further immediate improvements; and can he give particulars of them?
§ The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Colonel Ashley)Arrangements have been made for a widening of Harper Street and Union Street, and negotiations are proceeding which I hope will result in further improvements in this neighbourhood on the lines recommended by the London Traffic Advisory Committee on page 22 of their First Annual Report.
§ Mr. DAYCan the right hon. and gallant Gentleman say what has been holding up these negotiations, because I have had the same answer several times?
§ Colonel ASHLEYI think that not only the necessity of consulting a good many people, but also the necessity of finding the money.
