HC Deb 26 March 1928 vol 215 cc791-2
9. Mr. DAY

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the number of British settlers at present in Ceylon and the number of Europeans, and their nationality, on the present Legislative Council?

Mr. AMERY

The number of British European persons in Ceylon at the 1921 census was 7,342. This figure included British European officials in the service of the Ceylon Government. Exact figures for a more recent date are not available, but the total European population of the Colony on the 31st of December, 1926, was estimated at 10,834. Membership of the Legislative Council is confined to British subjects. There are at present 15 British European Members, five of whom are "ex officio" Members, six nominated officials, and four elected Members.
