Mr. CHAMBERLAINThe amount raised by rates in England and Wales during the year ended 31st March, 1927, was approximately £159,500,000, and the amount of Exchequer grants to local authorities in that year was approximately £87,000,000. The corresponding figures for the year ended 31st March, 1914, were £71,276,158 from rates and £22,617,246 from grants. The term "Exchequer grants" is taken to include, in addition to voted monies, sums paid out 547 of the Local Taxation Account and out of the Road Improvement Fund or the Road Fund.
