18. Mr. ROBINSONasked the President of the Board of Education if his attention has been drawn to the case of Mr. Wandesforde, of 29, Church Lane, Brighouse, discharged from the teaching staff of Brighouse Grammar School for reasons of economy; whether he is aware that Mr. Wandesforde lost his means of livelihood when he had to close his private school at Scarborough following the bombardment by enemy forces and for this received no compensation; and if it is possible to offer Mr. Wandesforde suitable employment as a teacher or an adequate pension to maintain himself and his family?
§ The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of EDUCATION (Lord Eustace Percy)I have made inquiries into this case. I understand that Mr. Wandesforde's appointment at Brighouse was terminated owing to the drop in the number of pupils at the school, but that he has been retained for the current term in order to give him an opportunity of securing another post. His further employment is a matter for the local authorities and governing bodies, who are responsible for the appointment of teachers. I am afraid that he has not sufficient years of service to qualify him for a superannuation allowance.
