§ 19. Mr. BUCHANANasked the Secretary of State for Scotland the total number of schools in the Gorbals Division and the number of children attending them; the same figures for Pollok and Cathcart; and the average size of class in each of those places?
§ Sir J. GILMOURWith the hon. Member's permission, I will circulate in the OFFICIAL REPORT the figures that he asks for.
§ Following are the figures:
§ supplied him with the information? Is he only giving us his own idea of the reports which are sent on to him?
§ Sir J. GILMOURI get reports from the police on the circumstances and nature of the crimes, and it is on those reports that I give answers.
§ Mr. R. RICHARDSONDoes the right hon. Gentleman take any precaution to inquire into the circumstances of the parents in these cases, where it is suggested that the children are left to themselves?
§ Sir J. GILMOURIt is not for me to inquire. That is a matter for the Court.
§ Mr. MAXTONDoes the right hon. Gentleman contemplate any steps to find out how the police establish this charge of lack of parental control?
§ Sir J. GILMOURAs I say, many of these crimes are obviously committed by youthful offenders, and this would not occur, if there were sufficient parental control.
§ Mr. BUCHANANWill the right hon. Gentleman make inquiries to see if there is not a difference in the police administration as between these two districts; and is he aware that the well-to-do district receives totaly different treatment from the police, compared with the poorer district?
§ Mr. MACQUISTENIs the right hon. Gentleman not aware that in the well-to-do district the parents recollect the maxim of Solomon, "Spare the rod and spoil the child"?
