HC Deb 21 June 1928 vol 218 cc1748-9
40. Mr. W. BAKER

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether, seeing that the Act for the employment of juveniles in Southern Rhodesia is creating difficulties in administration, his attention has been drawn to the action of the North Mel-setter Farmers' Association in requesting the magistrate and the native commis- sioner to attend a conference in order to discuss the difficulties which had arisen; whether His Majesty's Government has received any report upon these difficulties; whether he is aware that the principal of these is that of ascertaining the age of native children to be contracted; and what steps he proposes to advise the Southern Rhodesian Administration to take to ascertain whether or not a child to be contracted has reached the age of 10 years?

The SECRETARY of STATE for DOMINION AFFAIRS (Mr. Amery)

I have no information with regard to the matters referred to in the first three parts of the question. As to the last part, this is clearly a point solely for the consideration of the Southern Rhodesia Government.
