The House met at a Quarter before Three of the Clock, and Mr. SPEAKER-ELECT (Captain the Right hon. Edward Algernon FitzRoy) having taken the Chair, Prayers were read.

A Message was delivered by the GENTLEMAN USHER OF THE BLACK ROD (Lieut.-General Sir William Pulteney Pulteney) as followeth:

Mr. SPEAKER,

The Lords authorised by virtue of His Majesty's Commissioners desire the immediate attendance of this Honourable House in the House of Peers.

Accordingly, Mr. SPEAKER-ELECT, with the House, went up to the House of Peers, where he was presented to the said Lords Commissioners for His Majesty's Royal approbation.

Then, the LORD CHANCELLOR (Lord Hailsham), one of the said Lords Commissioners, signified His Majesty's approbation of Mr. Speaker-Elect in the name and on behalf of His Majesty.

The House having returned,

Mr. SPEAKER

I have to report to the House that this House has been to the House of Peers, where His Majesty has been graciously pleased to signify, by His Lords Commissioners, his approbation of the choice of myself as Speaker of this House.

I take this opportunity of repeating to the House my respectful acknowledgments of the honour it has done me and the confidence it has reposed in me, and of renewing the assurance of my entire devotion to the service of the House.
