§ 45. Mr. R. MORRISONasked the Prime Minister whether the Food Council has now received favourable replies from the trading associations and individual traders who had hitherto declined to furnish information; whether they are now willing to do so; and, if not, what action the Government proposes to take?
§ Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTERI have been asked to reply. I am informed that many of the trade associations and individual traders who, prior to the Prime Minister's statement in the House on 17th May, had failed to comply with the Food Council's requests have now furnished the desired information.
§ Mr. MORRISONCan the right hon. Gentleman say whether it is proposed to take any action in regard to those who have not furnished the information?
§ Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTERI shall await a report on the subject from the Food Council. I am sure all hon. Members will agree that, if the information can be obtained voluntarily, it will be much more satisfactory.
§ Mr. KIRKWOODIn the event of the right hon. Gentleman not being able to get the required information voluntarily, what steps does he propose to take in order to get the information?
§ Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTERThat is a hypothetical question, and I would refer the hon. Member to the Prime Minister's answer in which he stated the support that the Government would give to the Food Council if such support were necessary.
§ Mr. KIRKWOODThis is not a hypothetical question; it is a question of fact. Certain individuals have refused up to date to give the information, and I ask what steps the right hon. Gentleman is prepared to take in the matter?
§ Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTERThe Prime Minister made a very positive statement in this House, and hon. Members know that when the Prime Minister makes a positive statement in which he gives an undertaking it will be implemented.
