HC Deb 21 June 1928 vol 218 cc1757-8
60. Mr. SMEDLEY CROOKE

asked the Minister of Labour whether, in view of the fact that the Regulations governing part-time employment, as it affects unemployment benefit, is so little known, he will consider the advisability a issuing notices for exhibition in all Employment Exchanges throughout the country couched in language easily understood by the unemployed, that men and women in receipt of unemployment benefit can accept work for one, two, or three days in any week without forfeiting the unemployment benefit for the remaining days of the week?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

The rules as to the manner in which benefit is affected by broken periods of employment are set out in the leaflet U.I.L.8, of which I am sending my hon. Friend a copy; I do not think this statement could be simplified without risk of misunderstanding. The hon. Member is doubtless also aware of the rule that a person claiming benefit is not entitled to refuse suitable employment merely because its acceptance may reduce the amount of benefit he would otherwise draw; if he does so, he runs the risk of being disqualified for benefit.

Mr. CROOKE

Will not my right hon. Friend give this matter further consideration, in view of the fact that it would be much better that people should have even casual work than that they should remain continuously unemployed?
