HC Deb 14 June 1928 vol 218 cc1142-3
3. Sir ROBERT THOMAS

asked the Home Secretary the number of liquor shops in England and Wales trading under an excise licence only on 1st January, 1921, and 1st January, 1928, respectively; and whether he intends introducing legislation to bring these shops under the full control of the Licensing Justices?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

I think the hon. Member refers to the facts which are recorded in Column 11 of the Annual Volume of Licensing Statistics. If so, the total figure on 1st January, 1921, was 793, and that on 1st January, 1927, is expected to be 1,343. The Volume for 1927 is at present in preparation, and will contain the latest figures available. The point involved is one that has been noted for consideration in any review of the licensing laws.
