HC Deb 28 February 1928 vol 214 cc212-3
48. Sir CHARLES OMAN

asked the Chancellof of the Exchequer the date after which the various denominations of the new silver coinage can be obtained in bulk from the Bank and not merely in specimen sets by individuals applying at the Royal Mint?

Mr. CHURCHILL

Certain supplies of the half-crown, florin, shilling and sixpenny pieces are available or will very shortly be so. Persons asking for them through their banks will be able to obtain them from the Bank of England not later than the 12th March. The minting of crowns and threepences for general issue will be commenced in April next.

Sir C. OMAN

Do I really understand that we are going to have crown pieces after April?

Mr. CHURCHILL

Yes, the minting of crowns and threepenny pieces for general use will be commenced in April next.

Mr. W. THORNE

Are you not minting any more 2s. pieces?

Mr. CHURCHILL

Surely we could never get on without them.

Lieut.-Commander KENVVORTHY

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman as a father, whether he cannot expedite the issue of crown pieces before the Easter holidays?
