HC Deb 27 February 1928 vol 214 c36
75. Sir CLEMENT KINLOCH-COOKE

asked the Lord Advocate whether his attention has been called to a lottery of the snowball character now being carried on in Glasgow under the name of British Bonus Bonds and in the financial interest of the promoters; and will he consider instituting a prosecution in this case, seeing that lotteries got up for the express purpose of assisting the funds of hospitals and other charitable institutions are subject to prosecution by the police?

The LORD ADVOCATE (Mr. William Watson)

The question whether the scheme referred to by my hon. Friend involves any contravention of the law is at present under consideration.

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

Is the right hon. and learned Gentleman aware that a case of this kind took place in Cardiff only a week or two ago, and that the person involved was fined £5; and can he say whether there is one law in Scotland and one in England in this matter?

The LORD ADVOCATE

The answer to both parts of the question is in the negative.

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

Is the right hon. and learned Gentleman aware that these bonds are being distributed in this country, as well as in Scotland, and will he consult the Home Secretary on the matter?

The LORD ADVOCATE

I am not responsible for this country.
