HC Deb 20 December 1928 vol 223 cc3199-200
17. Viscount SANDON

asked the Minister of Health if he will give figures or an estimate showing as to adults and children separately, the number of people living in houses erected since the War; the number in houses already condemned or which would be likely to be included in slum areas suitable for demolition; and the number in the remainder, giving the estimated average number of adults and children per house in each case?

The MINISTER of HEALTH (Mr. Chamberlain)

The figures desired by my noble Friend are not available, and I have no data on which to base an estimate.

20. Viscount SANDON

asked the Minister of Health how many houses it is estimated are now empty; how many of these have been built since the War; how many have never been occupied; and what is the potential population involved in each category?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I regret that the information is not available, and that I have no data on which to base an estimate.

Mr. LUNN

Is it not the fact that many of these empty houses are in mining areas; that the people in these areas are unable to pay their rents, and are living two and three and four families in one house?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I do not think that arises out of the question.

Mr. LUNN

It has a good deal to do with it.
