HC Deb 13 December 1928 vol 223 cc2326-7
60. Major - General Sir ROBERT HUTCHISON

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what reductions, if any, in the higher posts of the Civil Service are contemplated?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Arthur Michael Samuel)

The extent to which it may prove possible to reduce the number of the higher posts of the Civil Service will depend on the future course of legislation and policy. The necessity for such post, as of all other posts, is under constant scrutiny with a view to economies wherever practicable.

Sir R. HUTCHISON

Is it the hon. Gentleman's intention to consider a reduction in the higher ranks in the Civil Service, as opposed to the continued reductions of the lower ranks?

Mr. SAMUEL

We take everything into consideration. There is no favouritism about the matter.
