HC Deb 05 April 1928 vol 215 cc2134-5
32. Mr. W. THORNE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, if he is aware that the Washington Building Trades' Defence Association has instructed local trade unionists to boycott British goods, owing to the action of the British Government in refusing to recognise the building trade conditions of that city in respect to the new Embassy; and if he will state whether there is any clause in the building contract which makes it obligatory on the contractor to recognise trade union rates and hours of labour, in accordance with conditions recognised by employers and trade unions in Washington, D.C.?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Lieut.-Colonel Sir Vivian Henderson)

The answer to both parts of the question is in the affirmative.
