HC Deb 03 April 1928 vol 215 cc1772-3
16. Mr. BUCHANAN

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is aware of the increase in unemployment among certain trades in the building industry in Glasgow; and if, in view of the housing needs, he will take steps to urge the local authority to increase its programme?

Sir J. GILMOUR

As the statistics in my possession show that the number of subsidised houses under construction in Glasgow in February, 1928, was greater than the number under construction in February, 1927, it would appear that the increase in unemployment as between these two months was not due to any slowing down in the building of subsidised houses. In addition to the number of houses under construction, the local authority, at the latest date for which information is available, had approximately 4,000 approved houses still to be commenced, and I am asking them to do all in their power to expedite a commencement with these houses.

Mr. BUCHANAN

Will the right hon. Gentleman ask the education authorities, in order to employ these men, to speed up their programme of school building?

Sir J. GILMOUR

That is quite another matter.
