§ 36. Sir H. BRITTAINasked the Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, whether he is aware that, in beauty spots and in the region of interesting historic towns in Germany, regulations exist with regard to the erection of buildings which may tend to disfigure the neighbourhood of such national treasures; and whether he will consider the possibility of strengthening existing legislation for the protection of national monuments and enlarging it to include the more famous beauty spots in this country?
§ Sir V. HENDERSONMy Noble Friend accepts my hon. Friend's statement as to the existence of these regulations in Germany, into the working of which he is making inquiry. While he shares the views of my hon. Friend, he fears that it would not be possible at the present time to promote legislation involving additional expenditure.
§ Sir H. BRITTAINIn thanking the hon. and gallant Gentleman for his answer, may I ask if he will be good enough to get into touch with the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, who before he held that office showed much imagination, initiative, and energy?
§ Mr. SPEAKERThis is a time for questions, not for testimonials.
