HC Deb 30 November 1927 vol 211 c482
18. Mr. LAWSON

asked the Minister of Labour whether he has further considered the position as stated before him by the representatives of the northern local authorities on 27th October; and whether he has made any further communication to those representing those local authorities?

Mr. BETTERTON

My right hon. Friend has done what he undertook to do when he met this deputation, namely, to bring their representations to the notice of his colleagues, and also to make quite sure that extended benefit is being administered with due regard to the circumstances of this area.

Mr. LAWSON

Are we not entitled to ask that a reply should be given? What is the result of the consultations with his colleagues? Are the Government going to do nothing with the tragic situation in the North-East?

Mr. BETTERTON

The last part of the question is clearly a matter for debate. Of course, the Ministry of Labour is not the only Department concerned. With regard to the first part of the question, I understand that my right hon. Friend did what he undertook to do.
