HC Deb 30 November 1927 vol 211 cc504-7
Lieut.- Commander KENWORTHY

May I ask the Prime Minister a question on business? In the event of the Motion standing on the Paper in the name of the Prime Minister being carried, is it intended to push on with the proceedings on Government business, or to rise at an hour when all the trains are gone? Has the right hon. Gentleman considered that aspect of the arrangement of the business of the House?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Baldwin)

At what hour the House rises must always depend on the progress which has been made with business. It is our desire to get on as fast as we can with the Committee stage of the Bill now under discussion.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

In that case, why did we rise at an abnormally early hour the last two nights—at an hour which happens to be the most inconvenient for hon. Members on this side of the House?

The PRIME MINISTER

The night before last the Motion to report Progress was moved from the Opposition Benches.

Mr. W. THORNE

Is the Prime Minister not aware that the reason why such slow progress is being made is that the Government are in such a fog about the whole business?

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

Is the Prime Minister really satisfied with the progress of the Business of the House?

Motion made, and Question put, That the Proceedings on the Unemployment Insurance Bill be exempted, at this day's Sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House)."—(The Prime Minister.)

The House divided: Ayes, 226; Noes, 130.
