HC Deb 29 November 1927 vol 211 cc244-5
Mr. ELLIS

(by Private Notice) asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that owing to the common interpretation of a certain Order just circulated in several areas of the Northern Command relating to Territorial officers and their participation in politics, it appears that all Territorial officers are now prevented from attending political meetings and from forwarding the interests of any political candidature, and whether such interpretation of the Order is correct?

Commodore KING

My attention has been drawn to a case in which the recent amendment to the Territorial Army Regulations regarding political activities of officers has been incorrectly reproduced in local orders. The amendment in question applied not to all Territorial Army officers but only to those holding what are practically fulltime posts as Brigade Commanders and so on and are drawing pay continuously. Steps had already been taken to correct the error.

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

May I ask whether, seeing that great confusion exists in service towns about these new Regulations, the hon. Gentleman can have them reproduced and carefully explained in detail, so that people may know what their position is?

Commodore KING

I think the original printed Order was perfectly clear.

Viscountess ASTOR

If it be clear, it is being misinterpreted.
