HC Deb 29 November 1927 vol 211 cc261-2
43. Colonel HOWARD-BURY

asked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been called to the overcrowding of the trains at Liverpool Street Station at certain hours of the day; and whether, he will take steps in the proposed Bill of next year to mitigate or prevent this overcrowding?

Colonel ASHLEY

I am afraid that under present circumstances some overcrowding of trains running to and from Liverpool Street is unavoidable during certain hours of the day. With regard to the last part of the question, I do not contemplate the introduction of legislation to alter the existing obligation of railway companies to provide reasonable facilities for traffic.

Colonel HOWARD-BURY

Could not the right hon. and gallant Gentleman use his authority to have these suburban lines electrified?

Colonel ASHLEY

I have been in the last two or three years in communication with the railway companies concerned. I am sorry my efforts have not been more successful.

Mr. R. MORRISON

Can the right hon. and gallant Gentleman say whether there is any possibility of the early construction of the line at Stratford, which was supposed to relieve Liverpool Street?

Colonel ASHLEY

I could not say without notice.
