HC Deb 29 November 1927 vol 211 cc252-3
25. Mr. WESTWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is aware that three parents at Budhill, Lanarkshire, refused to send their children to Uddingston Grammar School, the nearest centre for advanced division education, and that the Cadder School Management Committee could take no action against them because of Section 11, Sub-section (b), of the Education (Scotland) Act, 1883; if he has yet received the reasoned statement and proposed Amendment to this Act from the Education Authorities' Association of Scotland; and will facilities be given this Session for the Amendment's passage into law if agreement can be reached on the proposed Amendment?

Sir J. GILMOUR

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. The statement referred to by the hon. Member has just been received from the Association of Education Authorities and is now under consideration. With regard to the last part, I have nothing to add to the reply I gave the hon. Member on the 15th instant.

Mr. WESTWOOD

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this is really a serious situation in which the authorities are placed, and that it is only a matter of 40 words that would be necessary at the most to give the necessary effect to the Amendment proposed?

Sir J. GILMOUR

As it entails immediate legislation, I am afraid that it is out of the question.
