HC Deb 29 November 1927 vol 211 c235
13. Mr. HANNON

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the increased tariff which the Brazilian Government has decided to impose on imported cotton piece goods; and if he will make appropriate representations to that Government so as to prevent injury to Anglo-Brazilian trade?

Captain HACKING

My attention has been called to the suggestions for increasing the Brazilian Customs duties on cotton piece goods, but I am glad to say that the President of Brazil has announced that the Brazilian Government have no intention at the present time of changing the existing duties.

Mr. HANNON

Does not the Parliamentary Secretary consider that his Department would be usefully occupied in making representations of this kind in all similar cases to foreign Governments in the future?

Captain HACKING

That matter will receive consideration.

Mr. JOHNSTON

Will the hon. and gallant Member draw the attention of the British Shipping Conference to this action of the Brazilian Government?
