HC Deb 28 November 1927 vol 211 cc16-7
16. Mr. SNELL

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he is aware of the conditions to which Indian emigrants in Trinidad are subjected; whether indentured Indian labour is still continued there; and whether, in view of the appeal of recently returned Indian emigrants that all Indians in Trinidad should be repatriated, he will have an inquiry made into the conditions of Indian labour on that island?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Mr. Ormsby-Gore)

I have been asked to reply. My attention has not been called to any conditions affecting prejudicially the Indian emigrants in Trinidad. Recent statistics of existing indentures are not available but, in view of the lapse of time, I doubt whether any indentures remain unexpired. I am not aware of the appeal referred to in the last part of the question.
