HC Deb 22 November 1927 vol 210 cc1567-8
5. Mr. HANNON

asked the President of the Board of. Trade whether he has received any representations from the motor industry in regard to the classification of imports and exports of motors (complete) and chassis, as set out in the Trade and Navigation Returns; and whether he will consider the possibility, as from 1st January, 1928, of setting forth the Returns under the headings of private cars (complete), commercial vehicles (complete), chassis constructed solely for commercial use, chassis, all other, in accordance with the representations of the trade?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. Touring cars and commercial vehicles, complete, are already distinguished in the Import and Export Trade Returns. From 1st January, 1928, chassis also will he classified in the Export Returns in the manner suggested in my hon. Friend's question. In the Import Returns, however, the present classification of chassis will remain unchanged, as, in many cases, the British importer would not be able to declare whether or not chassis imported from abroad were "constructed solely for commercial use."
