HC Deb 16 November 1927 vol 210 c1009
13. Colonel HOWARD-BURY

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs wehther he has any further information with regard to the Embassy plate that was looted from Petrograd?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

Information that some silver which may have formed part of the plate belonging to the Petrograd Embassy was about to be sold in Riga was brought to the notice of His Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires. Mr. Carr has lodged a provisional claim with the Latvian police authorities, pending the definite identification of the silver in question, which is at present in a Customs warehouse at Riga.

Colonel HOWARD-BURY

Can my right hon. Friend say what is the exact position of this property which was stolen at Petrograd and seized by the authorities of a foreign country for payment of debt?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

As to the exact position at the moment, that is the only definition I can give. It is in the Customs House at Riga, but His Majesty's Government have lodged a provisional claim pending definite identification of the property as having been part of that stolen from the Embassy.
