§ 11. Mr. THURTLEasked the Under-Secretary of State for India how many Indians have lost their American citizenship under the recent decision of the Supreme Court of the United States of America; and what steps, if any, the Government of India are taking in the matter?
§ Earl WINTERTONAccording to the Government of India's information, the United States' Courts have cancelled naturalisation in about 30 cases. The matter is engaging the attention of the Government of India.
§ Mr. THURTLEIs the Government here taking any steps in the matter?
§ Earl WINTERTONIf the hon. Member wishes to ask a question as regards the action which the American Government is taking in the matter, I think he should address it to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
§ Colonel WEDGWOODCan the Noble Lord say whether deprivation of American citizenship includes the right to hold land already in the possession of these Indians, or whether they retain all their rights?
§ Earl WINTERTONI cannot answer that question offhand. Perhaps the right hon. and gallant Member will put down -a question. The whole matter is receiving the attention of the Government of India and His Majesty's Government.
