HC Deb 25 May 1927 vol 206 cc2005-6
46. Mr. TREVELYAN THOMSON

asked the Prime Minister when the Government will be prepared to announce their policy with regard to the continuation of the Rent and Mortgage Interest Restrictions Act?

Sir K. WOOD

I have been asked to reply. I would refer the hon. Member to my reply to a question put by the hon. Member for Devonport (Mr. Hore-Belisha) yesterday.

Mr. THOMSON

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that there is considerable anxiety as to when the Government's announcement will be made, and can he expedite the decision?

Sir K. WOOD

It has already been repeatedly stated in this House within the last few weeks that a statement will be made before the end of the Session.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

Have not representations been made to the hon. Gentleman's Department in favour of the abolition of all Rent Restriction Acts?

Mr. MARDY JONES

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that millions of tenants in the country are in great anxiety with regard to this matter, and, in view of the fact that the Act expires at the end of the year, could not the Government expedite their pronouncement, in order to relieve that feeling of anxiety, which is shared by many people, including many landlords?

Sir K. WOOD

No, Sir; I think ample notice will be given to everyone if a statement is made before the end of the Session.
