HC Deb 24 May 1927 vol 206 c1823
35. Sir R. THOMAS

asked the Postmaster-General whether he proposes in the near future to reduce the postal charges on newspapers from 1d. to ½d?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Sir William Mitchell-Thomson)

Newspapers can be sent as printed papers at the ½d. rate up to 2 oz. in weight. The 1d. rate for a registered newspaper covers 6 oz. in weight, and is thus appreciably lower even than the unremunerative printed paper rate. I cannot see my way to reduce it.

Sir R. THOMAS

Does not the right hon. Gentleman think, seeing that the Department of Overseas Trade is to be abolished, that a reduction of the postal rate for newspapers would be a good substitute?

Sir W. MITCHELL-THOMSON

As I have said, they are already carried below cost.
