HC Deb 24 May 1927 vol 206 cc1810-1
13. Mr. MacKENZIE LIVINGSTONE

asked the Secretary of State for Scot- land what local authorities in the crofting areas in the Highlands and Islands have intimated their intention to operate the Housing (Rural Workers) Act, 1926, which was widened so as to include crofters' houses?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I am informed that in the areas in question the local authorities of the Black Isle and Mid Ross districts of Ross-shire are the only local authorities so far to intimate their intention to operate the Housing (Rural Workers) Act, 1926. The scheme for the Black Isle district has been finally approved and that for Mid Ross district provisionally approved.

Mr. LIVINGSTONE

Does the right hon. Gentleman doubt the need of giving some fuller and further information to the crofters in regard to, their rights under this Act?

Sir J. GILMOUR

There is a conference to take place at Inverness very shortly, which, I hope, may materially assist in distributing information.

Mr. MACPHERSON

Will the right hon. Gentleman arrange that at that conference there shall be an explanation of the advantage of this Act to the rural districts.

Sir J. GILMOUR

The Under-Secretary of State will attend that conference, and I have no doubt full explanation will be given.
