HC Deb 24 May 1927 vol 206 cc1812-3
17. Mr. TINKER

asked the Secretary for Mines if any mines have closed down in Lancashire since April, 1926; and will he give the figures of persons employed in and about mines in Lancashire in April, 1926, and for March, 1927?

The SECRETARY for MINES (Colonel Lane Fox)

At 14th May, 1927, eleven mines in Lancashire were closed at which 1,411 wage-earners were employed in April, 1926. The total number of wage-earners employed at 24th April, 1926, was 96,400 and at 26th March, 1927, 90,900.

Mr. TINKER

What attempt, if any, is being made to deal with the unemployed miners under the Mining Act, 1926?

Colonel LANE FOX

That is a question which should be put to the Minister of Labour.
