HC Deb 24 May 1927 vol 206 cc1802-3
2. Sir JOHN POWER

asked the President of the Board of Trade the estimated amount which this country paid overseas last year for the purchase or for the use of cinematograph films?

Sir PHILIP CUNLIFFE-LISTER

No precise data are available for forming an estimate of the kind desired by my hon. Friend, but I am advised that the amount remitted abroad (mainly to the United States) annually in respect of the purchase or use of films may be taken at about £3,000,000.

Colonel DAY

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether any of that money is remitted to Australia?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

I cannot say that; I said mainly to the United States.

Mr. HARRIS

Is not the money remitted in the form of goods manufactured by British labour?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

I do not know.

Mr. H. WILLIAMS

How is it that the declared value of the films imported is so much less than the real value?
